For Unity and SketchUp
Image to 3D for Unity and SketchUp: from photo to a prefab or a placed component.
Download the GLB export for either program: it packages the mesh and its PBR textures in one file. In Unity, the glTFast package imports it as a native prefab in the Asset Database. In SketchUp, the glTF import flow brings the geometry and PBR material data into your model. Each section below covers the import steps and what you still have to add yourself.

Image to 3D for Unity: import the GLB with glTFast
1. Install Unity glTFast
Open Window > Package Manager, use Add package by name, and add com.unity.cloud.gltfast.
2. Drop the downloaded GLB into Assets
glTFast registers for .glb and .gltf editor imports and creates a native prefab in the project.
3. Select the imported asset
Use the Inspector to review import warnings and the generated meshes, materials, textures, and prefab contents.
4. Set scene scale and gameplay components
Generated geometry is a visual draft. Set scale for your game, then add colliders, LODs, and optimisation appropriate to your target.
- Use one default GLB importer: multiple scripted importers targeting .glb can cause Unity import errors.
- GLB embeds its textures. If you use a separate .gltf export, keep its .bin and images at their original relative paths.
- A generated static model does not include a production-ready collider, rig, or animation.
Questions about image to 3D for Unity
Does Unity natively import GLB without a package?
Use Unity glTFast for the supported editor workflow described here.
Can Unity load the model at runtime?
glTFast also supports runtime loading from a URL or file path, but this page covers the editor asset workflow.
Is the triangle count low enough to ship in a game?
Not necessarily. A generated mesh is not built to a triangle budget, so check it against your target platform and decimate or author LODs in your DCC tool before shipping it.
It looks right in the Unity editor but the model is magenta in a build. Why?
That is glTFast losing a shader at build time, not a bad import. Either the shader asset was not included in the build, or the keyword variant your material needs was removed by shader variant stripping. Add the glTFast shaders under Project Settings > Graphics > Always Included Shaders, or reference them from a Resources folder, and rebuild.
Which Unity render pipeline does this work with?
glTFast ships shader graphs for the Built-in pipeline, URP, and HDRP, and imports PBR metallic-roughness materials with normal, occlusion, and emission maps on all three. Note that only two UV sets are carried through in total, which matters if you later add lightmap UVs.
What does image to 3D for Unity not give me?
No colliders, no rig, no animation clips, no LOD group, and no lightmap UVs. Those are all editor-side work you do after the import, on top of the mesh and materials that arrive with the GLB.
Image to 3D for SketchUp: import the GLB with File > Import
1. Download the GLB export
GLB is the compact binary glTF format: mesh data and PBR textures are packaged together.
2. Choose File > Import
In the Import dialog, select the downloaded .glb file and choose Import.
3. Review Preserve Drawing Origin
SketchUp selects Preserve Drawing Origin by default. Leave it enabled to use the GLB origin, or turn it off if you need to place the asset differently.
4. Inspect the imported component and materials
Confirm its dimensions and material appearance before using it in the scene. Generated input is a starting point, not construction-ready geometry.
- SketchUp's current glTF reader supports GLB material data including PBR texture maps, but visual tuning may still be needed for your scene.
- Do not describe a generated object as a SketchUp solid unless you have checked and repaired its manifold geometry.
- For an older SketchUp installation without glTF import, use a Blender bridge or a compatible importer plugin rather than assuming direct GLB support.
Questions about image to 3D for SketchUp
Can SketchUp import GLB directly?
In a current desktop SketchUp, yes: the documented flow is File > Import, select the .glb, and the reader brings in PBR material data. Native glTF import with PBR materials is documented from SketchUp 2025 onward. It is not something every older seat has.
I am on an older SketchUp without glTF import. What then?
Two honest options, both with a cost. Install a glTF importer extension from the Extension Warehouse (SimLab publishes one), or convert first: open the GLB in Blender and export COLLADA (.dae), which SketchUp has imported for years. The Blender route is free but the material round-trip is lossy: expect to reattach texture maps rather than getting the PBR set intact.
Will the imported mesh slow my SketchUp model down?
It can. This is a triangle mesh, not the handful of planar faces SketchUp is fast at, and a few of them in one file is enough to make orbiting sluggish. Keep each import as a single component, hide or use a scene to turn it off while you work, and decimate the mesh in Blender first if you need several copies.
Is a SketchUp import ready for fabrication?
No. Check dimensions and mesh integrity first; a one-image reconstruction is not guaranteed watertight.
Why is the imported model the wrong size in SketchUp?
Generated model scale is normalised rather than measured, so nothing in the file knows how large the real object is. Scale the component against a known dimension in your drawing before you rely on it.
What does image to 3D for SketchUp not give me?
It gives you a mesh component, not parametric SketchUp geometry. There are no groups, layers, or clean planar faces to push-pull, and a dense mesh will slow down a large model, so use it for props and context rather than for building elements.
Working in Blender instead? The image to 3D for Blender guide has its own import check and measurements.
Two of the 4 pitfalls of importing an AI-generated GLB into Blender apply in Unity just as much: check the scale before you build around the model, and expect to set your own triangle budget for real-time use.
