Choose a font that survives the nozzle

A readable screen font is not automatically a printable font. FDM printing turns every narrow stroke and tight gap into a path constrained by nozzle width, line width, and layer height. With a common 0.4 mm nozzle, very thin strokes may become one fragile extrusion or disappear when the slicer decides there is no room. Start with Archivo Black, Alfa Slab One, or Bebas Neue when strength matters. Their broad shapes give the slicer more room to form continuous walls. The generator warns below 10 mm letter height because small text makes every stroke, counter, and corner harder to reproduce reliably.

Pacifico behaves differently. Its joined script can make a name plate feel like handwriting, and touching strokes help adjacent letters act as one part. The joins can also create tight internal gaps, so preview the sliced paths rather than judging only the smooth browser model. Allerta Stencil deliberately bridges enclosed counters in letters such as A, O, and R. Those bridges keep the inner islands attached when you print loose letters or cut a stencil. A normal font can leave a separate centre piece that must be positioned by hand.

Letters-only mode is useful for wall names, educational pieces, and arrangements you intend to place yourself. The piece count is reported as a practical upper estimate based on visible characters. Joined script may connect several characters into fewer physical islands, while a block word often remains one piece per letter. A name plate avoids that assembly problem by placing every letter 0.2 mm into a common base. That overlap is intentional. Coplanar faces can confuse mesh repair and slicing, while a slight overlap gives the slicer a clear joined volume.

Set letter height, depth, and plate size

Letter height controls the measured cap height of each generated line, not an abstract font point size. Thirty millimetres is a useful first draft for a desk sign or large label. Five to ten millimetres suits compact tags only when the font has heavy strokes and your printer is well tuned. Letter depth is the extrusion above the letter base. For letters-only output, that is the whole part thickness. For a plate or keychain, the letters begin 0.2 mm below the top surface of the plate and rise by the selected depth, so they form a connected printable solid in the merged STL.

Plate margin adds material around the measured text bounds. Increase it if screw holes, adhesive strips, or a border will be added later. Plate thickness is independent of letter depth. A thin decorative name plate can use a shallow base, while a keychain benefits from more material around the hole. The generated plate has rounded corners to reduce sharp points. Keychain mode extends the outline with a ring tab and removes a circular hole using the selected diameter. Four millimetres fits many small split rings, but measure the hardware you will actually use and allow for first-layer expansion.

The size report is in millimetres and compares the finished model with the selected printer bed. It checks the current orientation and a 90 degree turn. It does not rotate the sign onto a diagonal or account for a slicer skirt, brim, purge tower, or exclusion zone. Leave working space rather than treating the bed dimensions as a target. If a long word is too wide, reduce height, choose a narrower font such as Bebas Neue, split the text over two lines, or print separate letters.

Use STL or a two-object 3MF

The STL download merges the plate and letters into one triangle file. It is the broadest compatibility choice and works well for a single-colour print. A single-extruder printer can still produce contrasting text by pausing at the layer where the raised letters begin and changing filament. Because the letters overlap the plate by 0.2 mm, find the first layer above the plate top in the slicer preview rather than assuming the nominal plate thickness maps exactly to a layer boundary.

The 3MF download keeps two named mesh objects, Letters and Plate. A slicer can assign a separate filament or extruder to each object. Letters-only mode writes one named object because there is no plate. The file is a neutral geometry package with millimetre units. It does not contain a printer profile, temperatures, supports, or a prepared plate. Import it into Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer, PrusaSlicer, or another compatible slicer, assign colours there, and inspect the layer preview before printing.

Print name plates and keychains flat with the plate on the build surface. This gives the broadest contact area and puts raised text on top. Loose letters can also print flat on their backs. Very tall, narrow letters may need a brim, but a brim can be tedious to clean from internal corners. Increasing stroke size through font choice is usually a cleaner fix than relying on supports. The geometry uses seven curve segments and no bevel, keeping curved outlines smooth enough for common print sizes without creating a needlessly heavy mesh.

Prepare the design for a reliable print

Download both formats if you are unsure which workflow you will use. Keep the 3MF for object separation and the STL for compatibility. Open the chosen file in your slicer, confirm the dimensions, inspect the first layer around the keychain ring, and zoom into small counters. If the slicer drops a stroke, return here and increase the height or choose a heavier font. Scaling the completed model in the slicer changes the hole diameter and plate thickness too, while regenerating lets you keep those dimensions deliberate.

This tool is for typography, not traced artwork. If you have a badge, icon, or company mark, use the PNG to STL tool for a logo. If you need a sculpted object from a photograph, read the image to STL printing workflow. Existing mesh files can be moved between containers with the STL to 3MF converter or the OBJ to STL converter without re-generating the lettering.

3D text generator questions

How do I turn text into an STL?

Type one to three lines in the generator, choose a font and format, then set the letter height and depth in millimetres. The model rebuilds after a short pause and shows an orbitable preview, exact dimensions, triangle count, and print warnings. Download STL for one merged geometry file. Letters-only output rests at Z zero. Name plate and keychain output place the letters 0.2 mm into the plate so a slicer sees an intentional joined solid rather than two surfaces that merely touch.

Which font is best for 3D printed letters?

Archivo Black and Alfa Slab One are strong first choices because their broad strokes survive ordinary FDM line widths. Bebas Neue fits longer words into less horizontal space, though its narrow strokes need inspection at small sizes. Pacifico creates joined script that can reduce loose pieces, but tight loops may close in the slicer. Allerta Stencil keeps enclosed counters attached through bridges, which helps loose letters and stencil use. Always inspect the sliced paths because nozzle width and line width determine what the printer can actually form.

Can this 3D text generator make a keychain STL?

Yes. Select Keychain to add a rounded backing plate, an integrated ring tab, and a circular hole. The default hole is 4 mm, but measure your split ring and adjust the diameter before downloading. The result panel reports the overall size against the selected printer bed. Print the keychain flat with the plate on the build surface and inspect the first layers around the ring. If the wall around the hole looks weak, increase the plate margin or use a smaller hole rather than scaling the whole model unpredictably.

What is the difference between the STL and 3MF downloads?

The binary STL contains the finished triangle geometry as one merged model and has no object names, units, or colour assignments. It is the compatibility option for a single-colour print. The 3MF declares millimetres and keeps Letters and Plate as separate named objects, so a compatible slicer can assign different filaments to them. Letters-only mode has one object. Neither download contains printer temperatures, supports, or a process profile. Set those in your slicer and check the layer preview before starting a print.

Why are some characters reported as unsupported?

Each included typeface JSON contains a specific glyph set. A character that is absent cannot be turned into an outline, so the generator reports it instead of silently drawing a replacement box. Basic Latin letters, numbers, spaces, and common punctuation have the broadest coverage. Try another included font for accented letters or simplify the wording. The unsupported list is based on the selected font, so it can change when you switch fonts. New lines are layout controls and do not count as unsupported characters.

How small can I make 3D printed text?

The generator allows letter heights down to 5 mm and warns below 10 mm. That is a caution threshold, not a guarantee that 10 mm text will print. The narrowest stroke, nozzle diameter, configured line width, material, and printer calibration matter more than height alone. Use a heavy font, preview the toolpaths, and confirm that thin strokes receive at least one continuous extrusion. If details vanish, increase height or choose a broader typeface. Raising depth does not make a narrow top-view stroke wider, so depth alone will not solve that problem.
